Meat Loaf was born Marvin Lee Aday on September 27 1947, in Dallas, Texas. The son of Orvis Aday, a police officer, and his wife, Wilma, Meat Loaf (it’s never been clear as to how he got the nickname) had a difficult childhood. His father was a well-known drinker, and it wasn’t uncommon that his binges left Wilma placing her son in the care of her mother.
American opera singer Maria Callas was born Cecilia Sophia Anna Maria Kalogeropoulos in New York City on December 2, 1923, a date confirmed by the attending physician for the delivery and what is believed to be her birth certificate. (Over the years, discrepancies and confusion have arisen concerning Callas’s birth date. Callas herself, along with school records, had stated she was born on the 3rd while her mother had claimed the 4th.) Her parents, George and Evangelia, were Greek immigrants who eventually shortened their last name to Callas by the time of Maria’s christening.

Musician and actor Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Presley was supposed to be a twin, but his brother, Jesse Garon was stillborn. From very humble beginnings, Elvis Presley grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll.
Raised by loving, working-class parents, Presley’s family had little money, and they moved from place to place frequently. He was deeply devoted to his parents, especially his mother, Gladys, and was raised to have a strong faith in God. Presley attended the Assembly of God Church with his parents, where gospel music became an important influence for him.

The young May received his education at the Hampton Grammar School (now the Hampton School). An exceptional student, after graduation in 1965, he enrolled in the astrophysics program at London Imperial College, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in science. He would finish most of his Ph.D. by 1974 and finally complete it nearly 40 years later in 2007.
Born September 23 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, John Coltrane was always surrounded by music. His father played several instruments sparking Coltrane’s study of E-flat horn and clarinet. While in high school, Coltrane’s musical influences shifted to the likes of Lester Young and Johnny Hodges prompting him to switch to alto saxophone. He continued his musical training in Philadelphia at Granoff Studios and the Ornstein School of Music. He was called to military service during WWII, where he performed in the U.S. Navy Band in Hawaii.
